Now look at this. Ingrid Bergman of Casablanca fame does a tough gang leader here with a deformed face from a fire in her childhood! Ingrid's husband had a hand at doing a bit of the facial deformation and it certainly is effective. I doubt many beauty queens of the cinema would today allow their such unflattering portrayal. But there are few like Ingrid (I won't say no-one) as she was unorthodox in many ways. She didn't like make-up and was happy to push the envelope long before Merryl Streep came on the scene. Watching this film you know its not the Hollywood version which came later with Joan Crawford, because there is no reluctant hero or the compulsory court drama to to tidy up all the loose ends. But I have never seen her play a role like this tough lady who holds a gripe because she had a rotten childhood and ended up with an ugly face.
