The Dictator (2012) - A missed opportunity
I'll start off by saying Sacha Baron Cohen is a talent. But I don't know how many compromises he made in order to get the money to make this film. He should sack all his writers and himself. The film is like one long extended sitcom. The jokes just do not come off. Merely mouthing off racist, sexist, plain rude, and acting out other social taboos in itself is not funny. Take a leaf out of John Cleese's book and note that credibility is the first step in getting a laugh. You have to believe the character otherwise its like a bad cartoon not even fit for children. And why on earth include a stupid unbelievable romance, was he told to do it? Well I'm a little disappointed. I notice also a little bit of nepotism creeping in, a certain Erran Baron Cohen got the job for the music, no relation? Oh sorry I see him credited in Bruno also. I bet Kingsley is turning in his bed regretting his involvement in this effort. The central idea was good and I went in wanting to like this, but I guess I might have to revisit Charlie Chaplin with his own version to get my laughs.
