Delicacy - (France, 2012)
I shouldn't be reviewing this movie given that I fell asleep somewhere in between. But I suppose that's comment enough. Actually this romance is not too bad. Audrie Tautou is still pretty enough to look at even in her haggard old age of thirty five. In point of fact and not that it matters, all her salient features are becoming more pronounced so I'm not sure time will treat her kindly in that department. But back to the movie. The beginning started badly but the story does improve as it goes along. Nathalie meets and marries her prince, in what is the most improbable encounter in cinematic history. Shortly after, there is a tragedy and then you realize that they had to abbreviate the beginning in order to save time and go on to tell what would be the main story. Nat then immerses herself in her work for three years and then starts off another improbable romance in another improbable way. I will not spoil it by saying how, and at any rate it's not important. To add interest to an already only so-so story Natalie, believe it or not improbably resists the advances of her boss whilst going hot and cold with this other guy, Markus the Swede who is quite chuffed by her attentions on him. My head was reeling by now looking for the exit. But Audrie is good to look at and Markus is real and likeable and probably wonders throughout the story why this woman whom everyone is falling for should be interested in him. The film has this quasi musical feel about it and has a smattering of poetry sprinkled here and there. So, what do I think? Well given that there was only implied sex towards the very end I rate it a bit higher because you can take your first date to see it and there'll be no blushes. You certainly could not say that about Amelie, if you remember that particular scene... wink wink..
