Wake in Fright (1971)

One horse town

For a peek at Australian culture of sorts have a gander at this relic. A school teacher on his way back to Sydney gets stuck in a Bundanyabba (Yabba for short) a small mining town in the Australian outback. Here he learns the art of two-up a form of gambling and loses all his money. He meets the locals at the same venue, the pub where all the men of the town come to drink beer, smoke cigarettes, gamble and eventually struggle home. He goes with a woman who turns out to have been with every other man in the town. He gets involved with the boys (actually grown men) and goes shooting kangaroos, driving a station wagon in the dessert whilst drinking and generally carrying on like wild school kids. In a classic line Dick (Jack Thompson)  says: 'What's with him that he prefers to talk to a woman than have beer?' But beware this is not all Australia and things are changing. This is one for the vault.
