I Vitelloni (1953) Fellini (Italy)

Alberto Sordi salutes the roadside workers
In a small town in Italy (no, not 'Uscita' , as seen on the sign at the Railway Station which means 'exit' (lol)), five young men idle their lives away. We follow their daily lives as they hang out together passing the time with whatever might pass for entertainment. One of them marries after getting a girl pregnant and is forced to take up a job as a shop assistant. Married life does not stop him from womanising at every opportunity but when he tries it on his boss's wife he loses his job. No big deal. It is interesting that being a worker was seen by these men as somewhat denigrating. In one scene one of these young men calls out 'Stupid workers!' to roadside workers. This attitude was not shared by their families and may not have been widespread. Given this film is somewhat biographical, it may be that it was just a peculiarity to Fellini's friends. Nice film, a little nostalgic.
