Paper Moon (1973)

9 year old inhaling smoke
Quite unbelievable but nonetheless charming vignette from Peter Bogdanovich. Not in the league of his "last Picture Show" (1971) but again using small town America for a backdrop. This time set in the prohibition era the story tells of a travelling con man who may be, though we never find out, the father of the 9 year old girl he adopts as a partner in crime...Que!!! And that's the hard to swallow part. She is far too street-smart to be credible. But if you can swallow that disbelief and not just suspend it, then you'll have fun with this road caper. In it you'll learn how to confuse shop-keepers into giving you back more change than they should and how to sell bibles for outrageous prices, and other tricks too long-winded to describe here. The little girl who by the way is Ryan O'neal's real life daughter is not quite as cute as they probably intended and I'm sure I saw her inhale whilst smoking, though I suppose that is immaterial. As in Bogdanovich's 'Last Picture Show', turn-of-the-last century America looks eerily empty and the towns and roads are beautifully shot in black and white, for those of us who like that.
