Into the Abyss (2011)

Documentary film written and directed by Werner Herzog about two men convicted of a triple homicide which occurred in Conroe, Texas. Michael Perry received a death sentence for the crime, and Jason Burkett received a life sentence.

For the sake of a joy car-ride
the carefully invested life of
one mother is cut down
and then two teenagers too

two boys on a wild fun spree
intoxicated with youth
and abetted with alcohol
will one day look on this
with different eyes;

but for now the exhiliration is blinding their humanity.
It matters not their crime, nor the suffering of others.

Now we look at you through a window pane
and see your pain disguised through an embarrassed smile;

your life inside is a mystery to us and we try to imagine your days stretched end to end:
what endless trail of machinations meander to and fro?!

you have now reconstructed your person in order to explain your past
and suffer the agony of admittance to the author of your deeds;

and we oggle on your story in disbelief and thank our providence for
letting us have the mundane routine of our nine to five lives.
