Joey at the Somme |
A horse goes to war, does a hard day's job everyday till the end and survives being butchered for French cousine and is sent back to old England with it's rightfull owner! Now that would have to be a minor miracle worth retelling. The story may have been inspired by another real war-horse that survived the ordeal. There is a scene where Joey (the horse) bolts through the mud and barbed-wire obstacles in the battlefield of the Somme and only comes to a halt when it becomes enmeshed in it. A warm moment comes then when a British and a German soldier together cut Joy lose. Then you wonder at the fact that it is only a few scoundrels at the top of the political mire that let this attrocious war happen. You don't know whether to laugh or cry at the stupidity of humans. Good family flick. My daughter was transfixed by the cute beasts.
