Gummo (1997)
Watching Solomon do his muscles excercise to impress the girls reminded me of my own futile attempts to do the same when I was a teenager. This scrawny boy doesn't say much in this movie but he certainly leaves an impression. Its interesting how he takes up beating cats as a hobby mostly because someone else did it. He becomes a product of his environment. But you know he is not like that deep down because he saves a neighbour's cat from the aspiring claws of his friend Tummler. This film is gross. It kind of offends my middle class sensitivities. I say that with my tongue in cheek a bit but mostly realising what a wonderful place I live in. I look at these people (mostly young) and wonder how they can live in that hideous environment. Living for the next 'high' on glue or something. No-one works or does anything to improve their lot. They are not able to empathise with other living things, be it animal or geriatric. There is chaos everywhere and though the town was hit by a tornado or something there is no coordinated activity to restore anything. Maybe the tornado made no difference.
