David Niven, Mylène Demongeot
and Jean Seberg |
Missed the first ten minutes of this film and I'm now chasing around for the best possible digital print of it so that I ican wallow in it! People say they just don't make film like this anymore. No they don't, the Technicolor format died in the fifties probably because it was so expensive to make. But more is the pity, for how can you put a price on art? This screen delight is like marvelling at a painting masterpiece. The colour is typically
Technicolor and the frames are masterly composed so that symetry is maintained and it is not just a potpourry of colours. The black and white scenes provide a telling contrast with the narrated scenes which are in colour. I'm sure the actors clothes were carefully chosen with the composition in mind.
All the actresses are great to watch and David Niven plays his usual slimy playboy role well. The dialogue is a little weak but it is more than made up for by the great visual feast. Should be seen on a proper screen. It is listed for Blu Ray release but it might be a little bit like waiting for Godot.
