Transamerica (2005)

Good old SBS knows its market well: give them sex! OK, there was little in the way of sex scenes here but the topic can raise a few eyebrows, as I discovered when telling family and friends what I watched on TV the night before. 'Oh, what channel was that on...SBS?' Bingo! In the story a transsexual man now a woman, travels with his son around America and visit his parents. The son however does not know that this woman is his father and the people they visit are his grandparents. Good one! But not so far fetched among dysfunctional families. To make it more compelling viewing the man, woman is a devout Christian and his father is Jewish as is his sister. Anything else? Oh, the son's mother committed suicide and he made a living in the streets of New York prostituting and stealing, How does he come to be with his father in L.A. Details, details...
The man's woman's role is played by Felicity Huffman who gave it all and in spite of the somewhat comic nature of the situation credibility is maintained most of the way. Transamerica (2005)
