When you see this successful company executive being sycophantic to his wife you know something is wrong and something bad will happen, and it does. The wife conspires with her lover to have him killed.
This regular nice guy probably expected the same sort of success in matters of love as he got in the office. But business is business and love is, well a bit more tricky. There probably are no rules, and no set of procedures will fit all couples. Luck probably plays a part in most relationships. So at least save your dignity and don't suck up to your partner. Reminds me of the adage, 'Once inside a woman's heart a man must keep his head'
