Hooker latches on |
This film is a bit like a sitdrama: here is a situation and look what happens! The situations are faced by a teacher, played by Adrian Brody, in a school with disadvantaged pupils and also out in his private life. Each situation is punctuated with wild emotional results. He vears a bit to the left in teaching practices to try and get through to his students thus getting mixed results. The unorthodox practices get him into trouble and even leads to tragedy though he manages to get the students on his side. He also shelters a young hooker but suffers heartbreak having to turn her in to the authorities. He visits his grandfather who is dying and there we learn of his somewhat dysfuntional past with his family. In one scene we see him admonishing a student for beating up a cat to a pulp - not nice. And so on.
Brody plays the part well and the movie is stylish and decorated with metaphorical drawings, for example, a building collapses to indicate a total personal breakdown. The film is absorbing and with a good musical score. There are one or two scenes however with blatant smoking sponsorship which defintely stretch poetic license.
